“Why are you depressed, O my soul?
And why are you restless within me?
Wait for Elohim: for I shall yet thank Him, Who is the health of my countenance!”
– Psalm 42.5 –
Most faith traditions have a perception of the body as a temple.
Central to the existence of the people devoted to its purpose, the temple was intended to serve as a reference point to living in alignment with a higher purpose so as captured by the rituals, symbols and appointed times associated with it.
As the intended purpose and the proper functions of the entire temple structure, the temple was said to represent the perfect man.
As such, the system of life which ordered the temple was intended to convey the message that positive conduct, altruistic priorities, correct ideas and the balanced passions of the people would result in elevations of both the individual and societal quality of life.
The temple, being composed of various vessels, chambers, courts and gates, functioned for the purpose of establishing harmony in the lives of the people whose daily routines centered around it.
Interestingly, the temple was intended to serve as the house of the deity that was worshiped and invoked by the people.
In this light, we can innerstand why the temple was kept in pristine condition and regularly maintained and up-kept to remain in an impeccably clean condition.
This condition required continuous efforts to maintain the holy status quo and the attendants of the temple were scrupulous in their upkeep of the premises.
As Creator and creation would have it, it should be noted that as the premise of cleanliness being next to holiness is intrinsic to the quality of life for the people, so is healthiness also directly related to holiness and the quality of life for our bodies.
The fact that our bodies are innerstood to be the true temples of the Spirit of the Creator, the corollary condition of healthiness is also axiomatic to the reality of the presence of holiness in our lives.
Being that holiness carries the connotation of set-apartness, so too does healthiness carry the denotation that one has chosen to practice a lifestyle which sets them apart from illness or disease.
For when illness and disease are present, then there is no possibility for holiness to exist in the same environment as that which is robbing and defiling the temple of its intended purpose; to serve as a house for the Spirit of the Most High.
When we come to the realization of the true intent of the design of our human bodies, then we will ultimately seek to invest the time and energy in establishing, preserving and maintaining a healthy body so that we will be able to fulfill the prophetic word revealed in the book of Revelation which states,
Behold, the dwelling of Elohim is among men, and He shall tabernacle among them. They shall be His people, and Elohim Himself shall be among them and be their Power.
